Over 700 people attended Directions 2009, an economic forum for Northern Nevada businesses. This was the 17th year for the annual event. In years past the focus of the event has been to get the most out of a strong economy. This year, the theme was focused on navigating the uncertain economy on a national and local level.
Speakers addressed a number of topics throughout the day. The presentation that grabbed a great deal of attention from attendees dealt with the positive aspects of the Yucca Mountain Project in southern Nevada. Proponents say charging to store nuclear waste in there could bring millions of dollars into the state every year. The Regional Transportation Commission also grabbed a lot of attention outlining a plan that would improve local roads while bringing 3,000 new jobs to the area.
