SPARKS, Nev. (AP) - A Sparks detective who helped track down a
sexual predator has been named the city's police officer of the
year.

Police Chief Steve Asher says Det. John Patton has solved a number of high profile and complex cases over the years, including the arrest of a man accused of raping a 13-year-old developmentally disabled girl near the Sparks Marina earlier this year.

Patton cracked the case in part by spending countless hours
reviewing cell phone records.

Deputy Police Chief Steve Keefer says his "tenacity, ingenuity, diligence and dedication contributed to a successful investigation."

Patton received a plaque, a distinguished service award pin and $500, along with other commendations for his work on various cases.
