A semi truck hauling a load of pigs on Interstate 80 overturned this morning. Several of the animals were injured during the crash; others were walking on the highway & hit by oncoming drivers.
The semi transporting the load is operated by West Coast Livestock Express, according to information on the door. Results of an internet search shows the company is based in Sterling, Colorado.
Most of the pigs were rounded up. Another semi & trailer arrived at the scene to continue transporting the animals.
A preliminary investigation by the NHP indicates the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
The interstate is partially opened; vehicle are being allowed to drive in at least one lane. A KOLO 8 photographer who is at the scene says there is no backup.
