The International Camel Races are now underway in Virginia City. This year about 40 jockeys are expected to hit the course, but everyone will have a chance to experience the thrill of riding a camel. Top finishers will compete on Sunday
Camel Rancher Joe Hedrick has been supplying the stock for the event for about 15 years. He says this year zebra will be performing and participating in the races for the first time ever. The camel races also feature heats between ostrich, emus and chickens. Hedrick says when it comes to racing, riding an ostrich is as tough as it gets. “They're like a giant football,” he says “They can roll forward, back, either way, so balance is really important.”
