Stranded Cruise Ship Waits for Rescue in The Gulf of Mexico

A Carnival cruise ship with more than 3000 passengers on board is adrift in the Gulf of Mexico after its engines caught fire Sunday.

The ship, according to a CNN report, was returning to Galveston, Texas, when its engines caught fire, stranding it 477 miles from its final destination. A U.S. Coast Guard cutter is expected to rendezvous with the ship today, towing it to Progreso, Mexico.

Although the ship cannot move on its own, it still has on-board electricity to keep passengers comfortable, Carnival said to CNN.

The cruise ship is expected to reach Progreso sometime Wednesday.
