HONOLULU (AP) - The Naval Criminal Investigative Service says it has taken the lead in the investigation into the murder of an Oregon woman killed while vacationing in Hawaii.
NCIS spokesman Ed Buice said Friday he couldn't discuss details in the case. A Honolulu police spokeswoman declined to comment, deferring to NCIS.
A Japan-based Marine was arrested in the death of Ivanice "Ivy" Harris. The Portland native was living in Las Vegas and vacationing in Hawaii with her boyfriend and friend. She was last seen outside a Waikiki bar. Her body was found on Oahu's leeward coast.
The Marine was later released and hasn't been charged.
Harris family spokesman Andre Miller says, "Everybody is just kind of confused about whether this is a step in the right direction."
