WASHINGTON (AP) - The Marine Corps says a corporal who was declared a deserter nearly 10 years ago after allegedly faking his own kidnapping in Iraq has turned himself in to U.S. authorities.
Wassef Ali Hassoun is being flown Sunday from an undisclosed Mideast location to Norfolk, Virginia.
He will be moved on Monday to Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, where the commander of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force will determine whether to court-martial Hassoun.
Hassoun disappeared from his unit in Iraq in June 2004. The following month he turned up unharmed in Beirut, Lebanon, and blamed his disappearance on kidnappers.
Hassoun was returned to Lejeune and was about to face the military equivalent of a grand jury hearing when he disappeared again during a Christmas visit to Utah to see relatives.
