Man Convicted in 93-Year-Old Woman's 1989 Death

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - A California man will serve a life sentence in prison for the 1989 death of a 93-year-old West Texas woman.

A Lubbock County jury deliberated just one hour before finding Reynaldo Aguirre (ah-GEER'-ray) Rey guilty of capital murder in the death of Minnie Elkins of Lubbock. Prosecutors weren't seeking the death penalty, so the conviction carries a mandatory life sentence without parole.

The Madera, Calif., man was arrested in May 2011 and returned to Lubbock, where he lived at the time of Elkins' slaying.

Elkins' daughter found her bleeding body lying in her bed. An autopsy showed that she had died of blunt-force trauma to her head. Police say DNA testing of a hair found on Elkins' body earlier in May 2011 linked Rey to the slaying.
