SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Authorities say a 23-year-old man has been rescued from the side of a quarry cliff near the Utah State Capitol after clinging to it for more than two hours.

Salt Lake City Fire Department spokesman Jasen Asay says a gas station employee called 911 about 2 a.m. Friday and reported he hear a man shouting for help.

Firefighters say they used a spotlight to find the man, who was stranded about 150 or 200 feet up the cliff. Rescuers say they rappelled down, put the man in a harness and lowered him to safety.

Authorities say the man told them he just wanted to go on a night hike.

Fire department rescuer John Knowlton says the area was steep and rocky, and dangerous even for trained professionals.
