CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - The lead lawyer that helped New Hampshire win a $236 million verdict against Exxon Mobil over groundwater contamination knew as a child she wanted to be a top trial lawyer.

Forty-four-year-old Jessica Grant of the California law firm of Sher Leff was recruited three years ago specifically to try the state's case against Exxon Mobil.

In the past decade she has won a $172 million verdict against Wal-Mart for denying workers breaks and successfully defended Intel Corp. against a $450 million lawsuit involving breach of contract and patent claims.

One juror said she pulled no punches and presented the case in a straightforward manner. That may have contributed to the jury startling lawyers on both sides by returning verdicts after just 90 minutes.
