Deliberations Begin in Trial of Slain Fla. Couple

PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) - A jury is deliberating the case of a man accused of killing a Florida couple when a home invasion and robbery went awry.

The jury began discussing the case Thursday after attorneys for Patrick Gonzalez Jr. announced they would not call any witnesses on
behalf of the former karate instructor and 36-year-old father of six.

Gonzalez could face the death penalty if convicted. He is accused of leading a group of masked and armed men, dressed entirely in black, into the couple's home to steal a cash-filled safe. Nine of Byrd and Melanie Billings' young children were at home when their parents were killed.

A safe was taken from the home but it didn't have any money in it.
