Defense: Evidence Against Drew Patterson "Garbage"

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) - A defense lawyer at Drew Peterson's murder trial has told jurors that the state presented "garbage evidence."

Attorney Joel Lopez said during his two-hour closing Tuesday that prosecutors failed to prove the former suburban Chicago police officer murdered his third wife.

Lopez likened the prosecution's evidence to Swiss cheese, saying it was riddled with holes.

Lopez repeatedly said the state hadn't proved Kathleen Savio was even murdered. He said that fact alone should result in Peterson's acquittal.

Earlier Tuesday, a prosecutor told jurors there's enough circumstantial evidence to warrant a guilty verdict.

Savio's body was found in her bathtub in 2004. Her death was initially ruled accidental. It was reclassified a homicide only after Peterson's fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, disappeared.
