CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - Wyoming U.S. Sen. Mike Enzi is sitting on an unusually large pile of campaign cash now that Liz Cheney has abandoned her attempt to unseat him in a GOP primary later this year.
Enzi's campaign estimates he's got $1.8 million on hand after massive fundraising last year. That's well over three times the most money the three-term Republican has had at this point in any of his previous campaigns.
It creates a huge challenge for anybody who opposes Enzi. Even so, Wyoming Democratic Party Executive Director Robin Van Ausdall says an unnamed Democrat is preparing to do just that within weeks.
Cheney is a daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, and one of her own daughters is diabetic. She cited family health issues as the reason for dropping her campaign Jan. 6.
