SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman has resigned to become the U.S. ambassador to China.

Lt. Gov. Gary Herbert immediately assumes the duties of governor upon the resignation of Huntsman, who immediately took the oath to
become ambassador.

Huntsman is a moderate Republican who was the most popular governor in state history, winning re-election in November with a
record 77 percent of the vote.

Huntsman led efforts to normalize the state's notoriously quirky liquor laws and revamped the state's tax code. Before being tapped by President Barack Obama as an ambassador, Huntsman had been considering seeking the Republican Party's presidential nomination in 2012.
