KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - An effort to recall Kansas City Mayor Mark Funkhouser has fallen just short of the number of signatures needed.
The Kansas City Star reported Saturday on its Web site that the petition drive collected 16,821 valid signatures, 129 short of the 16,950 needed.
Funkhouser told The Associated Press that he had expected the recall to fall short. He said he wasn't sure how he'll respond if the petitioners continue their efforts to recall him.
And the petitioners vowed to keep trying. They said in a statement that they would first make sure that all valid signatures were counted.
Funkhouser's opponents say they started the effort because of widespread dissatisfaction with his work and controversy over his
wife's role in his administration.
