PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A driver hit a natural gas line at an apartment building and set off a gas explosion that injured six Rhode Island firefighters and a police officer.
Deputy Fire Chief James Mirza tells The Providence Journal that one firefighter and the officer remained hospitalized late Saturday morning.
Mirza says the driver ruptured the gas line in the accident early Saturday. He said the gas built up in a room that houses the apartment's heating and electrical equipment and then ignited in the confined space.
The injured firefighters and the police officer were taken to Rhode Island Hospital.
The Providence Fire Department didn't release the name of the driver or the driver's condition.
