Coast Guard stops NC search for overboard soldier

DRUM INLET, N.C. (AP) - The Coast Guard says a search for a soldier who fell overboard off an Army tugboat near the North Carolina coast has been suspended.

Crews had been searching since a report about the fall came in on Sunday morning. Seas were 7 feet at the time, and by that night, they reached 12 feet.

The soldier was a member of the crew of the Major General Winfield Scott based at Fort Eustis, Va. He last was seen on the bridge of the vessel while it was about 15 miles off Drum Inlet, south of Ocracoke Island.

Officials say the man hasn't been identified because his relatives haven't been notified.
