DALLAS (AP) - The state of Texas says the Peanut Corp. of
America has failed to carry out a recall order, so the state has
begun notifying customers itself.
Peanut Corp. filed for bankruptcy last week, just one day after
Texas health officials shut down its plant in Plainview and ordered
the recall of everything that had ever been made there. The action
followed discovery of dead rodents, feces and bird feathers in a
crawl space over the production area.
A company plant in Georgia is blamed in a nationwide salmonella
scare believed to have killed at least nine people and sickened
hundreds. That factory's peanut products were shipped to dozens of
food companies, prompting one of the largest recalls in history.
