City Council nixes request for withdrawal of emergency funds

COATESVILLE, Pa. (AP) - Fire-plagued Coatesville, Pa., has been racking up a lot of police and fire overtime. And the city manager wanted to withdraw $900,000 from an emergency fund to pay for it.

But last night, the city council said "no."

Council members who denied the request say they want to see whether any state or federal money can be had to ease the burden on the city budget.

Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey said after touring some of the fire damage that he's looking into federal aid -- but there's nothing definite yet.

Since the beginning of the year, 18 fires in Coatesville and five in nearby areas have been determined to be arson.

Coatesville is about 35 miles west of Philadelphia.
