WASHINGTON (AP) - As he orders higher energy efficiency standards for everyday household appliances, President Barack Obama is highlighting the parts of his stimulus plan that he says will help end the country's dependence on foreign oil.
Obama says the stimulus will create hundreds of thousands of jobs in a "clean energy industry." Speaking to employees at the Department of Energy, he spoke of spurring wind and solar power technology across the country.
He also said a "revolution in energy efficiency" could help federal buildings and American homes use less energy.
Obama says the memorandum he signed Thursday, requesting new efficiency standards for appliances, will save a "tremendous amount" of energy, while encouraging innovation.
