On Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at approximately 1:15 p.m., Mammoth Mountain Ski Area reported an avalanche in the Dragon's Tail area above chair 9 and requested logistical assistance from Mono County Search & Rescue. The avalanche was triggered by ski patrol cutting the slope. One ski patroller was caught and taken down the slope by the avalanche. The ski patroller’s partner witnessed the avalanche and radioed his location, asked for help, then proceeded to the patroller who was partially buried. Mono County Search and Rescue responded to Eagle Lodge to assist Mammoth Mountain Ski Area with potential logistics.

Mammoth Mountain Ski Patrol was able to extricate the patroller from the snow, load him into a toboggan and ski him down to Eagle Lodge/Chair 15, where they were met by Mono County paramedics. The patroller was alert and conscious when transported to Mammoth Hospital.
