Keeping it Local: Urban Hound

Reno, Nev. - Urban Hound is a relatively new business to our area, but they're already off on the right paw!

If you're looking for someone to watch your dog when you head out of town, or if you're going to have a long day of work and you want your dog to have some fun, Urban Hound is a great place to take your dog!

When you first tour the facility, or bring your dog in, you'll meet Squid.

She's a dog who sports a pink mohawk and a funky collar, and she can tell exactly how your dog will act around other dogs in a matter of minutes.

"She looks at them, she speaks the native language, so, I have to look at her to see what her reaction is," said Squid's owner, Kristen Mahrt, who's also Urban Hound's dog trainer and head evaluator.

It's all part of the screening process for doggy daycare, where they make sure your dog will play well with other dogs at Urban Hound.

"You should feel comfortable and safe, because we're all really trained really well here," said Mahrt.

Employees at Urban Hound constantly watch over the dogs.

"We watch the dogs," said Mahrt. "It can be stressful because there's multiple groups of dogs playing and wrestling, so you're constantly watching to make sure they're not getting too high energy. Once they get too high energy, it can become aggressive, so we make sure that never happens."

And it's not just owners who benefit from having someone to watch their dog.

The dogs get "a lot of socialization, which you know, a lot of times they need, so they really enjoy it, they get their energy out so they can play," said Urban Hound Owner Erin Upson.

Urban Hound is located right by Mayberry Park in Reno, and employees take dogs for walks frequently throughout the day.

"It's a great place to walk them," said Upson. "There's not a lot of traffic, so, it's really quite a perfect spot for dogs."

Inside the facility, dogs are sorted by size for playtime.

That way, they all get along!

"A lot of times, the owners tell us that they go home, and they're just you know, all happy and tired and sleep real well at night," said Upson.

Rates run between $15 - $20 a day for daycare, and around $30 a night for boarding.

Urban Hound is located at 7900 Sugar Pine Court, Reno, NV 89523.
Their phone number is (775) 787-1410.
