Reno, Nev. - Each week we profile a local business. This week's business survived the economic ups and downs for more than a century.
The Savage brothers know a thing or two about good plumbing in Northern Nevada. If you've ever used a bathroom at a local school, casino, or hospital, you've probably experienced the work of Savage and Son Plumbing.
"That's what I like about plumbing, because it's used a couple times a day," said Len Savage, president of Savage and Son.
They have a long history in our state.
"Our business has been here since 1893," said Pete Savage, the vice president of Savage and Son.
From the Savage Mine in Virginia City, to their first shop on Sierra Street, and their current shop on Yori Avenue, they kept expanding and adding new services over the years.
"We're a plumbing mechanical contractor that really does a lot of different things. We take care of the residential side, commercial side, and industrial," said Pete.
"There's nothing too small," said Len.
But their wide range of services is just part of what makes them successful, they say. They've been here for five generations, weathering hard economic times. They're the oldest contractor in the state of Nevada.
How did they do it?
"Really, it comes down to great customers that are very loyal to us, and we treat them with absolute fairness, we give them great service at a very reasonable price," said Pete, who also credits his employees for his success. He says many of the employees at Savage and Son have been with them for a very long time.
If you visit their business, you'll see a beautiful showroom, complete with the latest kitchen and bathroom fixtures. And there's a lot going on behind the scenes, too.
They have a fabrication shop, where local workers assemble pieces they'll use on jobs. It helps them to keep costs down, and quality up.
"It ensures, again, a better price for a better product," said Len Savage.
Savage and Son is located at 3101 Yori Avenue in Reno, and their phone number is (775) 828-4193.
