Reporter Lauren Garber gets a gun lesson.
Reno, Nev. - Every week on KOLO 8 News Now, we tell you about a different local business. It's our way of helping to support the local economy. This week, KOLO 8 News Now's Lauren Garber gets a gun lesson at Safe Shot Indoor Range.
Safe Shot Indoor Range is the only indoor shooting range in Northern Nevada.
"What gives us is the ability to shoot in a nice, safe environment, a healthy environment because we are a lead-free range, we do not shoot leaded bullets here," said Jim Harwin, the General Manager at Safe Shot Indoor Range.
Like many people who walk through the doors to Harwin's shop, Garber is a newbie at shooting. But, part of Harwin's job is teaching beginners how to use guns safely.
He says he's seen an increase in the number of women who come it looking for gun lessons.
"They ask a lot of questions, which is good, and we provide a lot of answers, which they need, and i think it's great," said Harwin. "I think the women are the ones who need to protect themselves more than anybody."
Safe Shot Indoor Range opened two years ago in a rough economy. But Harwin says, selling guns, and teaching people how to use them safely, is one business that wasn't affected.
"We feel that because the gun industry was still prospering in the bad economy, that safe shot had a really good chance at it, and we have done very well here," said Harwin.
He and his employees take a hands-on approach to customer service and safety.
"What we're doing is, we're teaching people how to be safe with a gun, own a gun in a good, safe way," said Harwin.
The show also houses a gun store, and every gun they sell, you can try before you buy.
