Reno, Nev. - This local business was started by a woman who didn't have a business degree, just a good idea, and a lot of determination to make a difference.
If you have kids at The Lion and the Lamb, Summit Christian, or St. Johns, you may already know "Miss Julie," as her students so fondly call her.
"I teach preschool fitness classes," explains Julie Woods. "It's not tennis, it's not gymnastics, it's not dance, it's creative movement, music. Something different every week."
During the week, her preschoolers look forward to spending 30 minutes in her class, and there's no question about their favorite part - the games.
Now, even if the students don't know it yet, Julie Wood's "Kiddin' Around" class is more than just games. She says the obesity rate has doubled since she started her business, so she teaches healthy eating, and makes exercise something to look forward to.
"I want them to take away that exercise can be very fun," said Woods. "I'd rather go out and play, so I want them to take away that idea, that playing is fun."
She says that when kids get all their energy out, and take a break from the classroom, it can actually help them with their studies.
"After they're active, they can concentrate a little bit better, they can calm down a little bit better, instead of wiggling in the classroom," said Woods.
She says she loves her job, but it wasn't easy starting her own business, but she kept at it, and didn't let fear stop her from succeeding and helping kids in our area.
Her business is so successful, she's been doing it now for 27 years!
