Keeping It Local: Gourmet Rooster

Reno, Nev. - Gourmet Rooster's Courtney Barnes spends a lot of time in her kitchen, perfecting her recipes for sauces and spreads.

"These are a way to kind of make something simple your own, and make it just a little bit fancier," said Barnes.

Barnes is a mother of two, who says she was just looking for a hobby after her first daughter was born.

"I got into this canning kick, and I entered some things in the local county fair, and I won! A few divisions! And I thought I should do this. I should make this a business, something that I have for myself," said Barnes.

Right now, she and her manufacturer make nine different spreads and sauces, things like County Fair Peach, which she says, "tastes just like peach pie filling."

Another popular one is Whiskey Apple, Barnes says that's the "sweet one that kids like."

One of her newer recipes, Carolina Style BBQ Sauce, which is "pretty different from anything that's out there right now."

And she's hoping to branch out as she continues creating new recipes.

Curious how to use her spreads and sauces? She's got that covered on her blog: Gourmet Rooster Blog.

"I do recipes, and I go step by step of my process," said Barnes. "I take pictures of everything I'm doing so you can follow along!"

All of Gourmet Rooster's ingredients and packaging are locally produced, and she hopes to keep it that way for years to come.

"When my girls grow up, I can give it to them, and it can be a family business," said Barnes.

While she does practice her recipes in her own kitchen, the actual products are made by a local manufacturer.

You can find her spreads and sauces at local spots like The Nevada Store, The Chocolate Nugget, and Wet Hen Café. You can also order on her website: Gourmet Rooster Website.
