PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) - The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Haiti say it's "deeply concerned" by a recent wave of violence in several cities in the impoverished Caribbean nation.

The statement mentioned a resurgence of violence and killings in a seaside shanty in the capital of Port-au-Prince and in other parts of the country but gave no other details.

An anti-government protest earlier this month turned violent when men in civilian clothes opened fire on some of the demonstrators. There were reports that several people were shot and injured but that couldn't be independently confirmed by The Associated Press.

Opposition leaders and their supporters have called more demonstrations for Monday in Port-au-Prince and a coastal city in the north.

The U.N. issued the statement Saturday.
