UNITED NATIONS (AP) - U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is welcoming the announcements of a temporary cease-fire in Syria for this weekend's Muslim holiday and is urging all countries and groups with influence to pressure all parties to stop the violence.

Ban's spokesman Martin Nesirky said the world is watching to see if the guns fall silent on Friday morning.

If they do, he said, U.N. humanitarian workers, working with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, are ready to move into areas that have not been easily accessible because of the fighting.

The secretary-general is urging key players to use their influence so the suspension of violence "can really take place and take hold" which will hopefully lead to a cease-fire and political negotiations, Nesirky said.
