BEIJING (AP) - A strong earthquake in southern China's Yunnan province has killed at least 175 people and injured more than 1,400.

China's official Xinhua News Agency says about 12,000 homes collapsed in one densely populated county northeast of the provincial capital. It says more than 180 people are missing.

The news agency says more than 2,500 troops have been dispatched to the disaster region and the Red Cross is sending supplies.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude-6.1 quake struck at a depth of 6 miles.
