PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) - A second day of testimony from South African Olympian Oscar Pistorius has ended with an early adjournment, after Pistorius broke down in sobs and howls while testifying about the night he shot his girlfriend to death.
Pistorius testified today that he sat over Reeva Steenkamp and cried, after breaking open the stall door in his bathroom last year to discover her there, mortally wounded. He has said he fired the shots through the door thinking there was an intruder there.
This was the first time Pistorius has spoken publicly about the details of the fatal shooting.
Prosecutors say his story is an intricate lie. They say he intentionally killed his girlfriend, who was a model and a reality TV show star, after an argument.
On the witness stand today, Pistorius began to cry loudly while testifying, forcing the judge to call a brief adjournment. When the judge returned, she ended the session for the day.
Earlier today, Pistorius left the courtroom briefly to change out of his dark suit and into a white shirt and shorts, with his prosthetic legs showing. He was then asked by his lawyer to take off the prosthetics in court and stand on his stumps by the toilet door, which has been on display in the courtroom for much of the trial. It was a partial re-enactment of the fatal night. Describing the moment he fired the shots, Pistorius said he was filled with terror because of the possibility of an intruder.
