More than 40 Killed in Wave of Violence Across Iraq
BAGHDAD (AP) - A wave of attacks targeting security forces in Iraq has left more than 40 people dead and nearly 240 injured.
Officials say insurgents struck in at least 11 cities today, gunning down soldiers at an army post and bombing police recruits waiting in line to apply for jobs.
In Kirkuk, where three explosions killed seven people and wounded 70, a university student asked "what kind of life is this?" when "we must write our wills" before leaving home.
There's been no claim of responsibility for the attacks. But security forces are a frequent target of al-Qaida's Iraq branch, which has vowed to reassert itself and take back areas it was forced from before U.S. troops withdrew from the country last year.
