Israel Rejects European Pressure Over Settlements

JERUSALEM (AP) - Israel insists it will press ahead with its latest settlement construction plans, despite strong European pressure.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said Monday that Israel will continue to stand up for its essential interests "even in the face of international pressure, and there will be no change in the decision taken."

Israel announced it would move ahead on planning for 3,000 settler homes, retaliation against the Palestinians for winning U.N. recognition of a state of Palestine in territories Israel captured in 1967.

Late Monday, Denmark joined four other European nations summoned Israeli ambassadors Monday to denounce the move.
