RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - Rio de Janeiro police say an armed man suspected of stealing a car hijacked a bus carrying several children on a field trip and forced it to take him to a nearby slum.
Authorities say Tuesday that the man and an accomplice had first tried to hide in a public clinic, where they took a woman hostage. The woman was shot in an exchange of gunfire between the suspects and police. She was in serious condition, while one suspect was shot and later died.
Police say the other suspect fled the clinic, took over the bus and eventually escaped, leaving the kids unharmed.
Bus driver Marco Pereira tells the Globo newspaper his biggest fear was the bus getting caught in crossfire between the suspect and police.
