JERUSALEM (AP) - U.S. Jewish community leaders say Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has told them that most Palestinians believe statehood can be reached only by compromising with Israel.

The S. Daniel Abraham Center for Middle East Peace said Tuesday that Abbas spoke to them late Monday on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly.

"Today it is clear to the majority of Palestinians that the fulfillment of the Palestinian dream requires an agreement and an historic compromise with Israel," the Center quoted Abbas as saying.

The Palestinian leader said he was "close" to a deal with former Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert, who left office in 2009.

Talks have been frozen for some four years, stalled by disputes over Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
