TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - People who lived through yesterday's twin earthquakes in northwestern Iran are describing moments of terror and panic.

One man remembers hearing birds crowing loudly seconds before the ground shook. State television says some 36 aftershocks have followed the quakes, which leveled at least 20 villages and killed more than 250 people.

One of the quakes measured a 6.2-magnitude. It hit near the town of Ahar in East Azerbaijan province.
