BOSTON (AP) - The Coast Guard has suspended its active search for four missing crew members of a British yacht found overturned about 1,000 miles out to sea.
The search for the crew of the 39-foot Cheeki Rafiki was halted Friday night, a few hours after the overturned hull was spotted by a U.S. Navy warship. The sailing vessel's life raft had not been deployed.
Coast Guard officials say "extreme sea conditions" at the time of a May 16 distress call put the crew's estimated survival time at 20 hours.
American, British and Canadian vessels and aircraft participated in the search covering more than 20,000 square miles in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
The Cheeki Rafiki had had been returning to England from a regatta in Antigua when it reported trouble.
