RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - A Brazilian academic who studies violence
says a survey of data shows the country's homicide rate for young
people has shot up 346 percent over the past three decades.

Julio Jacobo Waiselfisz coordinates violence studies at Latin American College of Social Sciences in Brazil and he published a report on youth killings Wednesday.

The survey found that Brazil's overall murder rate went up
fastest in the 1980s, but continued growing in the 1990s and 2000s.
Over those decades, young people became a higher percentage of
murder victims - rising from 11 percent of the total in 1980 to 43
percent in 2010.

That makes Brazil the fourth of 91 countries when it comes to
youth homicides, behind El Salvador, Venezuela and Trinidad and
Tobago.
