HONG KONG (AP) - Authorities in Hong Kong now say all six workers who fell some 20 stories down an elevator shaft are dead.
The accident happened when a construction platform collapsed inside the shaft in a 118 floor skyscraper under construction in the city.
The workers are believed to have fallen from about the 30th floor to the 10th.
Hong Kong's labor secretary says the developer of the International Commerce Center has agreed to pay each of the victims' families $128,000 (1 million Hong Kong dollars) on top of normal compensation payments.
Construction accidents have been on the decline in Hong Kong over the past decade. The government has been working to enhance safety amid a push by developers to build more of the soaring towers that have become Hong Kong's hallmark. Even so, some workers are killed every year, with falls a major cause of death.
