8 Killed in Collapsed Building in Nigeria

A fire department official says at least eight people have been killed in the collapse of a three-story building in the Nigerian capital.

Lagos State Director of Fire Services Adedeyo Aderemi says 42 people have been rescued from the rubble and are receiving medical
attention.

Sunday Pius, a survivor, says he was awoken at around 3 a.m. Sunday by a loud, frightening sound. He rushed outside only to realize the building was falling down. He says he helped pull out five bodies.

Hasty construction and lax regulation has meant that many buildings in West Africa are structurally unsound.
