Former Argentina President Dies

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) - Former Argentine President Raul
Alfonsin has died.

Alfonsin's personal doctor says the cause was lung cancer. He
was 82.

Alfonsin's leadership was seen as crucial to the restoration of
democracy in Argentina, and much of Latin America, from an era of
military dictatorships.

He led the country from 1983-1989, but his term was cut short by
economic collapse.

Shortly after taking office Alfonsin stunned many by ordering
the trial of nine members of Argentina's former ruling military
junta, but later supported amnesty measures for some.
