U.S. To Sanction Those Connected To A.Q. Khan

WASHINGTON (AP) - The United States says it is imposing sanctions against people connected to the architect of Pakistan's atomic weapons program.

The State Department said Monday that it would sanction 13 people and three private companies for their involvement in Abdul Qadeer Khan's nuclear proliferation network.

The United States says it believes the sanctions will "help prevent future proliferation-related activities."

Khan has been kept under de facto house arrest in the Pakistani capital since 2004, when he took sole responsibility for leaking atomic secrets to countries including Iran and Libya.
