Washoe County Reports First Lab-Confirmed Flu Case

RENO, Nev. (AP) - The Washoe County Health District has confirmed its first case of the flu this season in the Reno area.

Health officials say Monday that a laboratory identified the strain as type A H3, which can be treated with antiviral drugs within the first 48 hours of symptoms.

Dr. Joseph Iser of the health district says officials expect to see flu cases in northern Nevada starting in December and peaking in January and February.

Iser says a vaccine is the best way to avoid getting the flu. He advises getting the shot early because it doesn't take full effect for two weeks.
