SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CA - Recent numbers show two-thirds of adults in this county are overweight or obese. Dr. Oz has tried to stem the tide with his “Transformation Nation” where he encouraged viewers to lead a healthier lifestyle. While millions of viewers tried to lose weight, eat better and exercise, 10 finalists who succeeded are now in contention for one million dollars. One South Lake Tahoe Woman says she now feels like a million bucks, she’d love to win a million bucks.
South Lake Tahoe Resident Stella Ortega had a pretty good life--a husband, two daughters, four grand kids.
As she got older she says the pounds just started to slowly pack on, until one day last September at 192 pounds, doctors found an irregular heart beat, and blood tests showed Stella was pre-diabetic.
“You need to start living a healthier lifestyle, and if you don't you'll need a pace maker down the line. That was all I needed to hear,” says Stella.
Two weeks later, Stella says Dr. Oz showed her the way.
With his Transformation Nation, Dr. Oz encouraged more than a million people to eat healthier, exercise, and lose weight.
Six months later, Stella wrote a letter to tell Dr. Oz how she stayed to course and lost 45 pounds.
“Today my heart is stronger and healthier, the ride was bumpy sometimes. Never, Never, Never give up,” says Stella as she reads from that letter.
“She looks fantastic. I think it’s amazing. I've been telling everyone it’s such a wonderful success story,” says Stella’s Cardiologist Dr. David Young who gave her the life changing news back in September.
Stella and nine other Transformation Nation success stories are now vying for one million dollars for their efforts.
Stella has until this Sunday to get as many votes as she can,--you can vote ten times a day for the next 6 days.
So what would you do with a million dollars?
Stella can already answer that question.
She says she'd take care of her family of course, but also donate to Barton Memorial Hospital, the Boys and Girls Club, as well as a domestic violence organization she is affiliated with.
She also hopes to start a scholarship at the local high school.
If people in her community are wiling to vote for her, she says she wants to give back to the community.
