Sex Education Lagging in U.S. Schools

Sex education is becoming less prevalent in American middle schools. That's according to new data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In 2010, researchers studied schools in 45 states to see how many are teaching about pregnancy and STD prevention.
11 states teaching what the CDC considers essential information declined compared to its 2008 study. None of the remaining states had rising numbers.

Researchers say education on avoiding STDs, especially HIV, is critical, particularly for middle school aged children who probably haven't started having sex.

The survey also shows a disparity between the states on how many high schools are teaching proper condom use.
The next sexual education survey will focus on 2012 and 2014.
