Recall Issued of Drakes Bay Oyster Company Oysters

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - California health officials are warning people not to eat oysters from a Northern California oyster company because they may be contaminated with bacteria that can make people sick.

The California Department of Public Health says shucked and in-shell raw oysters from Drakes Bay Oyster Company may be contaminated with Vibrio parahaemolyticus.

The bacteria can cause vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, headache, fever and chills.

Health officials say most people who get sick from the bacteria recover without treatment in a few days, but severe illness can occur in people suffering from chronic liver disease, cancer, or other conditions that weaken the immune system.

A statement from the Inverness-based company says it initiated a voluntary recall after being notified by state health officials that three illnesses had been linked to its oysters.
