November is Diabetes Month

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Southern Nevada health officials are hoping to
raise awareness about one of the most prevalent diseases in the
country through November's American Diabetes Month.

Health officials say they've organized resources online in
English and Spanish so families can access classes on diabetes
management and information about the disease.

A statewide directory of services is available at
www.gethealthyclarkcounty.org.

More than 217,000 Nevadans have diabetes, and officials say the
statewide cost of treating the disease mounts to about $167 million
annually.

Authorities also say about 34 percent of Nevada children are
overweight or obese. Extra weight puts children at a greater risk
of developing diabetes.
