New Study Finds Women More Likely to Develop Melanoma

As the temperature outside is on the rise, a new study finds skin cancer cases are on the rise as well.

According to a new study by the Mayo Clinic, more young adults are getting Melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer.

The study also finds women are more likely than men to develop the deadly cancer.

Melanoma rates in patients 18 to 39 were tracked from 1970 to 2009. The cancer rates increased eight-fold among women and four-fold among men.

Researchers speculate that indoor tanning beds could be a key contributor to the rising cancer rate in young women. The study is published in the April 2012 Edition of the Mayo Clinic Proceedings.

The National Cancer Institute reports that there were about 76,000 new cases of Melanoma last year, and almost 10,000 people died from the cancer.

Just a reminder as the temperatures go up, make sure you have a sunscreen with an SPF above 15, and stay out of the sun as much as possible.
