CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Nevada is footing the bill to provide police security when out-of-state dignitaries come to visit.
Last year trips to Nevada by 10 other governors cost taxpayers an extra $16,351.
The state Board of Examiners chaired by Gov. Brian Sandoval approved the expenditure Tuesday. The Board of Examiners had to
approve the additional funds because the costs of dignitary protection exceeded the $3,000 set aside for that purpose by the Legislature last year.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports Nevada gives free dignitary protection services to top federal and state officials who come to the state, even if they are in the state on personal vacations.
Sandoval tells the newspaper he takes his own police protection when he visits other states, rather than relying on police in the places he visits.
