More Licorice Recalled Due To High Lead Levels

UNION CITY, Calif. (AP) - Health officials are expanding a recall of black licorice products made by a California company after tests showed they contained high levels of lead.

The California Department of Health issued the warning Friday urging consumers not to eat Red Vines products containing black licorice with a "Best Before 020413" label.

On Aug. 22 the health department recalled 16-ounce bags of Red Vines Black Licorice Twists with the same "Best Before" date.

Health officials say consumers should immediately discard the candies, which are manufactured by Union City-based American Licorice Co.

Officials say eating the products could lead to consuming twice the recommended daily lead limit for young children.

The department says the cause of the lead contamination is being investigated.
