Help at Hand When Elderly Relative's Health Fails

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) - When an elderly relative's health begins to decline, it's often difficult for families to be as vigilant as they'd like. They might be separated by long distances, unable to get away from work or pressed by other responsibilities.

But there are a variety of businesses willing to stand in for the family. They'll deal with the maze of responsibilities that comes with the care of an elderly loved one.

The service doesn't come cheap and it's generally not covered by insurance. But some customers have found it's worth the peace of mind.

These companies can find and screen nursing homes, handle insurance matters, monitor in-home caregivers and pre-plan funerals.

A company in Florida even managed to find a place to play bingo - in German.
